Generally, solar panels can be designated ‘Permitted Development’ for domestic premises which means planning permission is not necessary.
Exceptions to this are:
On flat roofs – as the solar panels on a flat roof are usually placed in frames that allow them to tilt towards the sun this means they protrude more than 0.2metres above the roof slope which is contrary to the ‘Permitted Development’ guidelines.
Listed buildings – it is possible to install solar panels on buildings within the grounds of a listed building but it needs the listed building to consent to the planning permission.
Conservation areas – it may still be possible to install a PV system under ‘Permitted Development’, however a planning application is needed if the installation faces a highway.
It is always best to consult the local planning department if you are unsure.

The assessment by one of our surveyors will last between 30 mins and 2 hours – they will discuss what your current electricity usage is and ways in which a renewable energy system can support this. They will explain the equipment they would recommend, take measurements and photos of your roof, electric meters and fuse board. They will either leave information about the equipment with you or ask Customer Care to email across the datasheets. Once our surveyor has all the information they need a quotation will be formulated and estimates for performance will be generated and emailed to the customer within 72 hours. This gives our customers all the information they need to make an informed decision.
